The ODDESSI Odyssey – Journey and Results

CE Hours 1

About this course

Join us for a special webinar with Dr. Russell Razzaque who will share the story of the ODDESSI (Open Dialogue: Development and Evaluation of a Social Network Intervention for Severe Mental Illness) trial and outline details of the long-awaited results, soon to be published at the end of this 8-year study. The ODDESSI trial is the largest randomized controlled trial of Open Dialogue to date. Conducted across multiple sites in the UK, the study compared the effectiveness of Open Dialogue to treatment as usual within the National Health Service (NHS.) Open Dialogue, originally developed in Finland, is a collaborative approach to mental health care that brings together the individual in crisis with their chosen support network—family, friends, and clinicians—in a series of dialogic meetings. The approach emphasizes shared decision-making and person-centered care. The ODDESSI trial aimed to rigorously evaluate whether Open Dialogue could offer better outcomes in terms of recovery, wellbeing, and service use. It marks a significant milestone in the international conversation about alternatives to traditional psychiatric care.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the core principles and practices of the Open Dialogue approach to mental health care, including how it differs from traditional psychiatric models.
  • Summarize the methodology, design, and key findings of the ODDESSI trial, and discuss its implications for service delivery and clinical practice.
  • Evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of implementing Open Dialogue in various mental health care settings, particularly in relation to person-centered, relational, and network-based approaches to crisis intervention.
