Intruders in the Mind: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Thought Insertion

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

Featuring three authors from the recently published book “Intruders in the Mind: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Thought Insertion,” this presentation offers an interdisciplinary and contextualized approach to Thought Insertion (TI), moving beyond traditional cognitive models. The talk frames TI within the broader context of delusional thinking, examining its critical relationships to selfhood and meaning-making. We argue that traditional views decontextualize TI by neglecting its vital embodied and intersubjective dimensions, which are crucial for understanding its emergence. By prioritizing patient experience, the discussion emphasizes effective clinical communication when engaging with these experiences. The presentation will conclude by exploring the consequences of this contextualized approach for understanding the function that delusions have in experiences have in experiences commonly diagnosed as psychosis or schizophrenia.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the limitations of traditional neuropsychiatric approaches to Thought Insertion (TI) by explaining how they decontextualize the experience and neglect its embodied and intersubjective dimensions.
  • Evaluate the philosophical implications of Thought Insertion, specifically by citing how TI challenges the fundamental concepts of selfhood and the ownership of one's mental content.
  • Apply patient-centered communication strategies to the discussion of TI by prioritizing the subjective reality of the patient's experience and fostering trust, thereby mitigating the risk of epistemic injustice.
